Terpenes

The smell is the
signal.

Terpenes are the aromatic compounds that give every strain its smell — and they shape the effect more reliably than the indica/sativa label does. Here’s what the big seven actually do.

Myrcene

Earthy, musky, clove

The most common cannabis terpene. Leans sedating and relaxing — the classic 'couch' feeling. Also found in mangoes and hops.

Common in indica-leaning strains

Limonene

Citrus, lemon, orange

Bright and mood-lifting. Associated with stress relief and an uplifted, social headspace. Found in citrus rinds.

Common in many sativa-leaning hybrids

Caryophyllene

Pepper, spice, wood

The only terpene that also acts on cannabinoid receptors. Linked to calm and physical relief without strong sedation. Found in black pepper.

Common in 'gas' and OG strains

Pinene

Pine, fresh forest

Clear-headed and alert. May counter some of THC's memory fog. Found in pine needles and rosemary.

Found in focus-forward strains

Linalool

Floral, lavender

Calming and soothing — the lavender effect. Popular in sleep and anti-anxiety products. Found in lavender.

Common in relaxing nighttime strains

Terpinolene

Fruity, herbal, fresh

Complex and uplifting, slightly energetic. Less common, prized by connoisseurs. Found in apples and nutmeg.

Found in many Jack and Haze lines

Humulene

Hops, earthy, woody

Earthy and grounding, often appears alongside caryophyllene. Found in hops and coriander.

Common in earthy, classic strains

How to actually use this

When you shop, skip “got any good sativas?” and instead ask for a terpene profile that matches your goal — “something high in limonene for daytime” or “myrcene-forward for sleep.” Many products list their top terpenes right on the label or COA. Our budtenders can pull the terp numbers on request — it’s how the pros pick.

The entourage effect

Terpenes don’t work alone — they interact with THC, CBD and minor cannabinoids to shape the overall experience. That’s why two strains at the same THC % can feel completely different. The full chemical picture, not the single number, is what you’re really buying.
