Every term you’ll hear at the counter, decoded. Bookmark it for your next visit.
- Badder
- A whipped, cake-batter-textured cannabis concentrate. Easy to handle, big on flavor.
- BOGO
- Buy one get one — a common dispensary deal (sometimes buy-2-get-1, or get the second for $1).
- Budtender
- The salesperson behind the dispensary counter who helps you choose products.
- Cannabinoid
- An active compound in cannabis. THC and CBD are the famous two; CBN, CBG and CBC are minor ones.
- CBD
- Cannabidiol — a non-intoxicating cannabinoid used for calm and recovery. Won't get you high.
- CBN
- Cannabinol — a mildly sedating cannabinoid common in sleep products.
- COA
- Certificate of Analysis — the lab report showing a product's potency and that it passed pesticide and mold testing.
- Concentrate
- Any product made by extracting cannabinoids from flower — rosin, resin, badder, sauce, diamonds.
- Decarboxylation
- Heating cannabis to convert THCa into active THC. It's why you can't get high eating raw flower.
- Diamonds
- Crystalline THCa concentrate — among the most potent forms of cannabis.
- Disposable
- An all-in-one vape with the battery and oil built in. Use it up and recycle it.
- Distillate
- Highly refined, nearly pure THC oil. Potent and consistent; flavor is added back in.
- Edible
- Any cannabis you eat or drink — gummies, chocolate, beverages. Slow, strong and long-lasting.
- Eighth
- An eighth of an ounce of flower = 3.5 grams. The standard dispensary unit.
- Entourage effect
- The theory that cannabinoids and terpenes work better together than in isolation.
- Flower
- The dried, smokable bud of the cannabis plant. The classic form.
- Hybrid
- A strain bred from both indica and sativa genetics — most modern strains are hybrids.
- Indica
- Traditionally associated with relaxing, body-heavy effects (the 'in-da-couch' shorthand).
- Infused pre-roll
- A joint with concentrate and/or kief added to the flower for a much stronger hit.
- Kief
- The powdery resin glands that fall off flower — potent and used to boost joints or bowls.
- Live resin
- Concentrate from fresh-frozen plants, preserving terpenes and flavor. Uses solvents.
- Live rosin
- Solventless concentrate pressed from fresh-frozen hash with heat and pressure. Premium.
- Microdose
- A very small dose (often 2.5 mg THC or less) for subtle effects.
- Pre-roll
- A ready-to-smoke joint sold pre-rolled.
- Sativa
- Traditionally associated with uplifting, energizing, cerebral effects.
- Sauce
- A concentrate with a liquid, terpene-rich consistency, often with diamonds in it.
- Strain
- A specific cannabis variety with its own genetics, aroma and effect profile.
- Terpenes
- Aromatic compounds that give strains their smell and shape their effects. See our terpene guide.
- THC
- Tetrahydrocannabinol — the main intoxicating cannabinoid. The one that gets you high.
- THCa
- The non-psychoactive acid form of THC in raw flower; heat converts it to THC.
- Tincture
- A liquid cannabis extract taken under the tongue for precise, fast dosing.
- Topical
- A cannabis cream, balm or lotion applied to skin for localized relief — usually no high.
- Vape cart
- A cartridge of cannabis oil that screws onto a 510-thread battery.
- Zip
- Slang for one ounce (28 grams) of flower.
